Based on proven automotive technology, the design
utilizes concepts that are already widely familiar to families traveling with infants and toddlers.
Air New Zealand consulted with Plunket NZ and
Whakawhetu, a national sudden unexpected death in
infancy prevention program, as well as its own medical
unit, to develop these Skycouch enhancements.
Te improved product introduces a dedicated infant
harness and belt, allowing infants to remain lying down
throughout the cruise phase of flight. Previously, they
were required to be seated on a guardian’s lap when the
seatbelt sign was on. A new infant pod also provides additional comfort and protection for the airline’s young-est Skycouch customers.
Te Skycouch Cuddle Belt, which was previously
only certified to allow two adults or an adult and child
to lie down side by side on the Skycouch, has also been
updated to allow two children to use it—providing
greater flexibility to families.
Air New Zealand GM-customer experience Anita
Hawthorne expects the changes to
be popular with family groups.
“Te Skycouch has proven to be
a real game changer in the economy
cabin. While we initially marketed it
to couples, we quickly found the product suited parents with young families
especially well. Parents can relax while
their children are able to have their
own space and flat area to play without interrupting other passengers,”
she said. “Trough this process, we’ve
spoken to many customers who have
traveled on the Skycouch, and their
feedback has helped to inform the updates and refinements we’re introducing this year.”
After gaining certification and regulatory approvals, the airline started
introducing the new Skycouch product onboard its Boeing 777 and 787-

they fly and is an example of how Air New Zealand is
continuously building on its world-class service reputation as an airline that is committed to innovation and
constantly improving the flying experience for its passengers.
Skycouch attracts a higher revenue yield because passengers pay more for the flexible product features, valu-ing the benefits of lying down and having a dedicated
space for children to stretch out or play. Te additional
revenue earned through Skycouch is expected to be further enhanced by the new improvements.
