Airlines are increasingly turning to new open-data platform and predictive maintenance software tools. Airbus and Boeing are among suppliers that are
delivering such tools, but some airlines are also developing their own platforms.
Delta Air Lines, one of 29 carriers to sign multiyear
contracts to use Airbus’ Skywise open-data product, is
using the platform to track and analyze operations and
performance data from its feet of Airbus aircraft, as
well as determine when maintenance is needed.
Skywise was launched in 2017 in cooperation with
Silicon Valley-based Palantir
Technologies, experts in big-data
integration and advanced ana-
lytics. Skywise is part of Airbus’
strategic plan to consolidate and enhance its Global Ser-
vices division, which it says could generate $10 billion
over the next decade.
Delta will use Skywise primarily as a predictive
maintenance tool to provide prognostic alerts to reduce
costly unscheduled maintenance.
